In order to practice hand hygiene in areas and situations with little and difficult access to water, this resource must be used with extreme care. The prototype has the potential to clean and recycle water used locally for washing hands in a cycle without chemicals or electricity.
WHY HANDWASHING
Studies show that washing hands can reduce incidences of diarrhea and pneumonia in young children by 50% and limit the risk of a cholera epidemic. The prototype built in Basel has the potential to clean and recycle water used locally for washing hands in a cycle without chemicals or electricity.
COOPERATION
Together with a team led by Maryna Peter from the Institute of Ecopreneurship at the School of Life Sciences FHNW, experts from Gravit’Eau and Terre des Hommes, and the team from https://designforone.world, the prototype of a hand washing station was developed and built at the HGK Basel. The project was sponsored by Terre des Hommes, who used and evaluated it in a camp for displaced people in Nigeria with 200 children.
